We all know college is expensive. Here in NM, over 60,000 students rely on Federal loan and grant programs to help pay for their college education. However, these programs are in danger of being cut in order to reduce the federal deficit. We need to balance our economy, but cutting student-aid programs could be short-sighted for longterm recovery.
On November 9th, students at UNM will take action to protect student aid. We will be making calls to Senator Jeff Bingamin's office in order to urge him to save the Pell grant from federal spending cuts. Sen. Bingamin sits on the Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP) Committee and will have a front seat in deciding what will happen to the Pell grant.
Specifically, we want to make sure
- eligibility requirements stay the same
- the maximum grant is not lowered but kept constant at $5,500.
Help protect student aid programs like the Pell Grant. Join us tomorrow in Smith Plaza to make this important phone call to Sen. Bingaman's office.
