For years, wasteful subsidies to big agribusiness have made unhealthy food cheaper while the cost of healthy food has gone up. Over the last 15 years, the cost of fruits and vegetables has gone up 40% while the cost of junk food like soft drinks as decreased by 25%. Companies like Monsanto have worked hard to get billions of taxpayer dollars, making it cheap to produce junk food like corn syrup, and making it cheaper to sell Twinkies than carrots.
We need to stop subsidizing unhealthy food.
What's worse, we're facing an obesity epidemic. Over the past 30 years the obesity rate in school-aged children has nearly quadrupled. Today, 1 in 3 children are overweight or obese. School lunches are unhealthy, and kids are not getting the nutrients they need to live a healthy lifestyle. While everyone has the choice for what they want to eat, and parents have every right to feed their children what they choose, cost can be a major reason for why people may choose one food over another. Therefore, when unhealthy, processed food is also much cheaper than healthy food, it creates the negative health effects we see around us everyday.
We want to make sure these direct payment subsidies are cut from the Farm Bill, the bill that comes up every 4 years that establishes all farm and crop policy for the country. Call your legislator today to make sure they know how you feel.
